Theory and experiments of long wave run-up on a conical island
When tsunami attacks an island, there are some cases that the island is damaged seriously by the trapping phenomena of tsunami. Iin this study, theoretical solution on the trap of long wave by a conical island is obtained by taking account of the effects of both finite radius of the island and the wave refraction on the sloping beach. The theoretical solution are examined carefully to find the trend in the distribution of the run-up height along the coastline and to determine the characteristics of the frequency response of the maximum run-up height. The condition in which trap has appeared strongly and the effect of coriolis force on the maximum run-up height are also examined. Furthermore, calcultion is carried out by using the present theory to examine the run-up height of tsunami observed along the coasts of Oki and Okushiri Islands. In order to verify the validaty of the present theory, experiments are carried out and their results are compared with the theoretical solution. The results of the experiments have proven the validity of the present theory.
