Indonesian Sea Power;
The rise and fall of maritime kingdoms in Indonesia is recorded in the pages of national, regional, and global history. Many historians describe these kingdoms as very powerful in terms of their maritime power since they were able to utilize Nusantara's marine resources and potentials for the good of the people's welfare and strength. They received acknowledgment and respect from other powers in the world during their golden ages. As an archipelagic state, the seas, straits and oceans are more than just "waters" for Indonesia; they are the medium to unite the nation, medium for resources, medium for science and technology, medium to establish and expand influence. and medium for defense. Sea power has and will always be an important element of a country for a number of reasons. First, around 70 percent of the earth is covered by seas and oceans; second, 90 percent of global trade are distributed and transported through the seas; third, the majority of the world's largest and most influential cities are located in a 200-kilorneter radius from the coast lines; and fourth, international law declares the freedom of a state to utilize the open seas for its economic goals without interfering the sovereignty of others. Sea power is much more than just fleets of naval ships. lt covers a country’s entire maritime potentials, from merchant ships, fishing armada, maritime industry and service, and maritime people. Therefore it is paramount for lndonesia to establish and develop its own Maritime Domain Awareness which covers all aspects of life. The development of Indonesia‘s awareness and identity as a maritime nation would then become an important social modality to achieve "Indonesia Gemilang”… 2045.
