PRINCIPLES AND DESIGN OF LINEAR ACTIVE CIRCUITS
The primary aim of this book is to discuss the principles and technigues utilized in the analysis and design of linear active circuits. The approach taken is from the modern pole-zero viewpoint, and throughout the book the treatment is design-oriented. In other words, advanced analytical tools and practical design problems are integrated in order to perform a synthesis between the pole-zero and practical circuitdesign viewpoints. Although, for good reasons, transistors are emphasized in the text, vacuum tubes are not altogether abandoned.
The internal electronics of transistors, tunnel diodes, and vacuum tubes are discussed in sufficient detail in the text to enable the reader to understand clearly the basic principles and physical processes underlying the operation of the active devices. He can therefore appreciate fully the fundamental limitations of the devices. This knowledge is very important in problems where optimal design methods areto be developed. “The approximations involved in eguivalent circuits representing the devices are clearly indicated and justifed. The eguivalent circuits are derived logically and systematically.
Fundamental principles are stressed throughout the text. “The ultimate objective is not analysis, rather the design of circuits to meet a set of performance specifications. Approximations in the expressions, and simplifications in the circuits, are therefore made and clearly stated, so that the student may (without too much routine work) develop and carry out preliminary circuit designs. He can then check the accuracy of his preliminary design by going into a somewhat more detailed analysis, using accurate but relatively complicated models for the device. The book provides a tool for devising original circuits and developing design methods, not only for existing devices, but also for devices of the future.
The material presented is illustrated by many design examples and accompanied by problems which conclude each chapter. These will help the reader to grasp the subject matter and enable him to apply the theories in practical design problems. Material in the various chapters is arranged as follows.
