The Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN) was established in 1967 to cooperate in securing the region's peace, stability and development. The ASEAN currently comprises of ten countries namely: Brunei Darussalam, Cambodia, Indonesia, Laos, Malaysia, Myanmar, Philippines, Singapore, Thailand, and Vietnam. Despite considerable differences in geography, demography, social, economic and environmental conditions — and different systems of governments — the ASEAN countries have identified and collaborated in various environmental issues of common interest. Geographically t SEAN countries lie in a strategic position at the crossroad between the Pacific Ocean and the | n Ocean, and between the Asian and Australian Continents. This position makes the ASEAN &ion unigue in various aspects. The geological structure of the region is very much determined »y the junction and collision of the four major tectonic plates of the world, namely the Indo-Australian, Eurasian, Pacific and the Philippine Plates. The tectonic activities are responsible for the freguent earthguakes and tsunamis which usually bring catastrophes to this region.
