Sound Propagation in The Sea
Sound Propagation in the Sea was orignally pubhshed by the Advanced Research Projects Agency of the Depaitmen’ oi Defense. and was based on lecture notes for a short course on the subject given over a period ot several years. They have been revised, expanded, updated and are adorned with references to enable the interesicd reader to follow up on a particular topic. A chaper on the subject of propagation modeIing by Paul Etter has been added. The specialized subject of sound propagation n the ocean has a surprisingly vast literature and compries the most active research aspect of sonar and underwater sound. It includes a wide variety ot phenomena and effects No summary of i could said to be compleze and comprehensive. The present summary. like all summaries reflects the interests and knowledge of its author, perhaps to an inordinate degree. Yet it is hoped that this summary will be useful as a point of departure to those getting started in, or already working on, this multi-facetted subject.
